October Beyond The Pink Ribbon: The Dream I Can’t Project Manage…

It’s October, and you might think I’m about to write another blog post about cancer.

Honestly, I thought so too.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, after all.

But here’s the thing: I write about whatever is occupying space in my mind at the moment, and cancer has already received a lot of attention on this blog.

And if I’m being completely honest, the whole “pink-washing” month sometimes bothers me.

Awareness shouldn’t be seasonal.

I don’t need October to remember cancer.

I can create awareness on a random Monday night in July, or on an ordinary Wednesday afternoon when no one is talking about it. The people living with it, surviving it, grieving it, or fearing it don’t get to pause their experience for eleven months and revisit it in October.

So today, I’m writing about something else.

Motherhood and Career Balance.

And before you laugh, let me be clear: I know absolutely nothing about it.

I’m not a mom.

At least not yet.

But I am considering becoming one someday, and lately I’ve found myself having long conversations with myself about what that could mean.

Not just personally.

Professionally.

How do women do it?

How do you raise children, grow a career, nurture relationships, take care of yourself, and still have enough energy left to be the person you want to be?

I know many successful women who make it look effortless.

I also know it’s not.

If you’re one of those women reading this, you’re probably laughing and saying, “Andrea, of course it’s hard. But it’s possible.”

And I believe you.

What scares me isn’t the work.

It’s the unknown.

I’ve spent most of my life knowing how to achieve things.

Study harder.

Work harder.

Learn faster.

Create a plan.

Execute the plan.

Motherhood feels different….

It’s one of the few goals in my life that doesn’t come with a project timeline, a step-by-step process, or a predictable outcome.

And for someone who literally became a Project Manager, that’s uncomfortable.

I often find myself wondering what I would have to give up professionally to accomplish another dream.

Although maybe “give up” isn’t the right phrase.

That sounds too dramatic.

Maybe it’s not sacrifice.

Maybe it’s prioritization.

Maybe it’s reminding myself that success isn’t always measured by promotions, titles, or accomplishments.

Or maybe it’s realizing that building a family is an accomplishment too.

I don’t know.

That’s the honest answer.

I don’t have a lesson for you today.

I don’t have advice.

I’m actually looking for it.

I’m curious about the women who came before me.

The women who had careers they loved and children they adored.

The women who worried they wouldn’t be enough at work.

Or enough at home.

The women who carried ambition in one hand and a baby in the other.

What were your fears before becoming a mother?

What surprised you?

What did you think you would lose that you actually didn’t?

What lessons would you share with someone standing at the edge of that decision?

Because from where I’m standing, it looks simultaneously beautiful, terrifying, impossible, and completely worth it.

And maybe that’s how most worthwhile things begin.

Not with certainty.

But with curiosity.

So this post is less about me sharing my thoughts and more about me asking for yours.

I’m listening.

Con Amor, Andrea
